Korean Style Chicken (Jjim Dak)

Korean Style Marinated Chicken with soysauce.
Well, I can't think of a good English name for this one, but I assure that this is the best chicken dish.
Yesterday, we went to BuyLow and chicken drumsticks were so cheap that we couldn't resist buying it.
While I was at work, my wife made this for me with the chicken.
She is the main reason I get fat so much.

Ingredients: Chicken drumsticks(about 7~8), 2 potatoes, 1 carrot, 1 onion, 1 green onion.
Sauce: soy sauce 2/3 cup, water 3 cups, sugar 4 tbs, corn syrup 4 tbs, oyster sauce 1 tbs, cooking wine 3 tbs, pepper 1 ts, minced garlic 1 tbs, oilve oil 4 tbs, minced ginger 1 tbs.

If you can't find ginger, or oyster sauce, it's okay.

1. Prepare the veggies by chopping them biteful size. Also dip the chicken in milk for 30 minutes.
2. put chicken in water until the water boils. Throw out the water. It has chicken fat and wastes.
3. put sauce and cicken together and boil. add water until the top of chicken is little bit over the water.

* this is the sauce

4. boil until the meat is half cooked. You can add some water if sauce is too low

5. add veggies. We added some Korean yam noodles and rice cake, too.

6. Cook until meat and veggies are fully cooked. We had some leftover corns so added them, too.

Cheese-Rice-Dawg

Koreans like corndogs as snacks.
We sprinkle sugar and keetchup on top of it.
We also have something called rice-dog.
It sounds weird, but it's delicious~!

Ingredients: fun-size hotdogs, steamed rice, shredded cheese, bread crum, eggs

1. Put hotdogs in boiling water to cook.

2. Put the meat on the stck.
3. This is the most complicated step. Put a little bit of rice on your palm and sprinkle cheese on top of it, put the meat on top of it and sprinkle cheese again, then cover and shape the dog with rice.

*It's really hard to make it this pretty, if you are not skilled like my wife.

4. Cover the rice-dog with bitten egg and then bread crum

5. Fry it in oil

* It's well-cooked

6. Serve with ketchup.

Fried Sweet Potato (Goguma Mat-tahng)

Koreans like Potato a lot.
Sweet potato is an exellent diet food.
It's low on calories and high on dietary fiber.
It also has a lot of vitamin C.
Today, we made a famous Korean dessert.
You can buy really sweet sweet potatoes from Oriental markets, but I heard that sweet potatoes( not Yams) from BuyLow is alright, too.

Ingredients: Sweet potatoes, sugar 1/2 cup, water 1/2 cup, olive oil

1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them in a small size.
We will fry this, so we should remove water by wipe it with paper towel.
Otherwise, the water inside will POP in the oil.
* you can prevent burining the potato by cutting the shape edges round.

2. Fry with the olive oil
* If you fry twice, it will be crispier.
3. We will make the sauce. Put same amount of water and sugar in a pan and boil it with medium heat.
You do not want to stir or touch the sauce but just leave it there until it is lightly browned.
* You can just use corn syrup instead of making the sugar syrup, but it is much sweeter.
4. mix the fried sweet potatoes into the syrup and stir.

5. We like to add some sesame seeds.

It's a KOREAN-STYLE Pizza~

Hey, all.
Today, I wanted to introduce you a simple pizza recipe.
I know it's not a Korean dish strictly speaking, but there's gonna be a distinct Korean taste in it.
It's Pancake Sweet Potato Pizza.
Koreans love to put sweet potato in our pizza.
Sadly, sweet potatoes here are not as sweet as the ones in Korea.
But it's worth trying. and you can always buy Korean-style sweet potatoes from one of the oriental markets.
Ingredients: 2 Cups of Pancake mix, milk half cup, 1 egg, 1 sweet potato, bacon, sliced hotdog, red pepper, broccolli, and shredded mozzarella cheese

1. slice the sweet potato, and put it in a bowl, put in a microwave for two minutes with the lid on. Broccolli should be steamed or cooked just a little bit.

2. Make a pizza dough out of pancake mix by mixing the pancake mix and egg and milk. Put the sweet potato in the mix. (We added a black sesame seeds to add more Korean taste)
3. And make the pancake. We usually make two and put thme together.
4. Put all the ingredients on the dough.
5. And the cheese as well.

6. Preheat the oven to 390 F. Bake the pizza for 10 to 15 minutes.

Sweet sour pork (Tang su yook)

Hi! I’m Dohyup’s wife. We’ve been together for seven months. We are a happy couple yeah!
He asked me posting on his blog so, I prepared “Tang su yook” which is famous delivery food in Korea with Ja jang myon (noodle with black soybean sauce). They are like Chinese food but we can’t find these dishes in Chinese restaurants so, I have to say they are Korean-Chinese food. Actually, Tang su yook is similar to sweet sour pork. However, the flavor is totally different to me. Anyway, when we feel hungry or have anything special menu for a meal in Korea, we simply make a call for ordering Ja jang myon with Tang su yook. Then, it takes only 15 min to get food. So fast!! However, it’s impossible here to have that food with an easy call. (There are several Korean-Chinese food restaurants in Vegas but not hereL) Therefore, I made “Tang su yook” last Saturday for my husband and myself who was desperately missing Korea.

Before starting recipe of Tang su yook, I need to sorry for my bad English!! Sorry~~ I’ve been here for only 7 months, and I’m still struggling with English. T-T

Ingredients:

*Fried pork
24 oz pork (I used boneless pork rib), 2cup corn starch, 2cup water, 1 egg, vegetable oil for frying

*Sauce
1 onion, 1/2~1 carrot, 1/2 green pepper, 1/2 can of pineapples, 1 orange, 2 cup water, 2 Tbsp vinegar, 10 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp ketchup, 1 Tbsp corn starch and 1 Tbsp water mixed, 1/2 tsp salt

Mix 2 cup corn starch and 2 cup water, stir well, and let sit for 1-2 hours.

Cut pork into thin strips like a finger shape and add little salt and pepper and mixed well.

After the corn starch and water are separated, carefully drain water.

Heat oil in a large pot to fry. Don't fill more than a half way.

Put meat and one egg in a corn starch batter, mix well with hands.

Once you are done consistently coating the meat with batter, deep-fry it in oil until golden.

If you like crispy thing, I recommend to fry the pork twice before serving it.

Now we will make sweet sour sauce!

Cut all ingredients like the picture above. Size doesn’t matter but don’t cut carrots too thick.
Boil water in a wide pan and add ingredients you cut and put sugar, vinegar, ketchup and salt.

After 15 minutes, turn off the fire and put the corn starch and water mixed into the pan and mixed well. Then it will be thick sauce.

When everybody’s ready for having a meal, pour the sauce onto fried pork and enjoy it!

Teriyaki Beef (Bulgogi)

I LOVE meaet.
I am the persone who can't understand why there's such a thing like veggie pizza exists.
My wife is always worried about me eating too much meat.
So, there's another meat dish.
This time, it's beef.

Ingredients: Beef 1lbs. Green, yellow, red peppers (any of them about 1 ea), mushroom (as much as you want), carrot(half), green onion(just a little bit), soy sauce(5 table spoons), Cooking wine(optional), pepper(little bit), garlic(powder, minced, or crushed, 2 table spoons), Sugar(1table spoon)

1. All the vegies must be chopped and beef should be sliced.
(The thinner the meat, the better it will taste.)
I really like onions, but I couldn't find any at home.

2. Put soysauce, pepper, garlic, sugar, cooking wine into the meat and mix it well.
Wrap the container and let it sit for about an hour.
(I usually prepare it the night before and put it in the fridge.
That way, the meat absorbs everything around it)
3. Cook it on the frying pan(no oil needed)
Once the meat is half-cooked, put green peppers in.

4. Put it on a dish and enjoy.

Grilled Chicken Teriyaki (dak bulgogi)

The other day, my mom went shopping with my wife and bought us a huge pack of chicken meat. So, we decided to make some Chicken Bulgogi.

Bulgogi is a Korean dish, which you marinate the meat in sauce and grill it on a pan.

It's one of my favorite dish.

There are many variations on Bulgogi, some like it very hot and spicy, and some mild and sweet.
Southern part of Korea, where I am from, people make it really hot and spicy. We add lots of red pepper powder.
But As you go north, the food becomes mild and sweet.
I also like it hot, but today, we will make it somewhat mild and sweet for our Americal fellows.

Oh, one thing before we start.

My mom is a really good cook and I try to learn from her.
However, in her recipe, everything is always so vague.
I would ask her, 'mom, how can you make this?'
And she would answer, "Oh, that's so easy. You put a little bit of salt, and a little bit of sugar, and tiny bit of soy sauce, and ..."
For her, everything is so little bit that I can't comprehend so much.

I am trying to be as precise as possible, but just want to let you know sometimes, it's really hard.

Well, here it goes.

Ingredients: Chicken (1.5lbs) Soy sauce(5 tbsp) Sugar(2 tbsp) onion garlic salt and pepper, and veggies of your choice
1. Either you choose boneless, skinless chicken, or you separate meat out of bone. And cut it in about the size of meatball. (1.5 lbs)
2. One thing is, if you don't like the distinct smell of chicken, you can soak it in milk for 30 minutes. The meat will be tenderized and the meat odor will be gone.

3. You need to make the sauce.
Mix two table spoons of sugar, five table spoons of soy sauce, hint of salt and pepper, 1/2 table spoon of minced or powdered garlic, and a quater of minced onoin.
Put everything in a mixer and mix it well.

4. Put the sauce on the meat and mix well. Let it sit for 20 minutes. (If longer than 20 minutes, the meat juice will be out of the meat because of osmosis, and your meat wouldn't be as good)

5. Put 2 spoons of cooking oil on a pan and grill it until the outside of the meat is brown.

Oh, I am not really a veggie lover, but you can grill your favorite veggies with the meat, too.
Good veggies to go with are onions, cabage, green pepper, etc.
